The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

The Goatherd book club gathered at Sour Cherry Farm for its discussion on “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” by Carson McCullers. Because Boo has been a fan of the book for most of her life, she was invited as a special goatherd guest. Kate, a new member of the book club, also made her premier appearance.

And Kris, who was discussion leader for the book this time, also surprised everyone with a lovely treat of oysters, grapes and champagne, which was the menu at the famous lunch that Carson McCullers held with Isak Dinesen and Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller.

Braised Savoy Cabbage

They eat a lot of cabbage in “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.” We checked, and the word is mentioned 15 times. John Singer, our hero, if you can call him that, hates it.

“Singer sat at the table three times a day. He ate what was put before him, except cabbage and oysters.”

And because Singer didn’t like it, well, that meant Mick Kelly didn’t like it either.

“Each new thing she learned about him was important… He didn’t like cabbage… Now she couldn’t eat cabbage either.”

Red Eye Gravy

Red Eye Gravy is usually made with leftover ham grease and coffee. But I rather like the way it’s made at Momofuku Ssam Bar, with mayo mixed in. I found a recipe for that in BonAppetit, where they call it “Redeye Mayonnaise.” I simply quadrupled that recipe to come up with enough for slathering on hot biscuits and topping with salty ham. I also tweaked the hot sauce. They called for sriracha. I used my favorite, Cholula.

Red Eye Gravy
2 teaspoons instant coffee powder
4 teaspoons water
1 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon hot sauce (I like Cholula)

Stir coffee into water until combined. Mix with mayo and hot sauce.

On the Road

Kris and Tom hosted the book club’s meeting about “On the Road,” and Rory led an eye-opening discussion, wherein the club members revealed their own “On the Road” experiences, and discussed the Deans they’ve known over the years. And some people (don’t look at Liz) whittled down one person’s story to an aura: purple. Yes, folks, it’s getting weirder all the time.

Recipe: ‘On the Road’ Denver Green Chili

As might be expected, our book club has turned into a sort of cooking club, too. Each meeting, the hosts try to match the meal with the book, whether through food mentioned it it, or inspired by a region. Kris and Tom were hosts for “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac, where Sal and Dean spend a hell of a lot of time in Denver, yes, yes, yes. And if you’ll remember, Sal also fell in love with a Mexican girl — and we do mean girl — while working the cotton fields.

So the centerpiece of this meal was Denver Green Chili, and so as not to be outdone, Kris and Tom also presented the group with homemade tortillas, fer Chrissakes. Another incredible meal by the Goatherd.

Recipe, after the jump.

Loving ‘On the Road’ audio version

You guys know I love the audio, but ‘On the Road’ is looking to be more of a natural than some of the other books. It’s read by a guy named Will Patton, who I bet everybody knows from TV and the movies.

Here’s a sample from Chapter 2: Dean obsesses over Mary Lou and smokes too much green weed
‘On the Road’ sample

Will Patton

I . . . am . . . loving . . . it.

The book has a poetry that really lends itself to the ear and Patton has just ever-so-little-bit of a Western drawl that fits the language of the book.  If you haven’t tried the audio book, this would be a great place to start (I get mine from audible.com). Load up your iPod, get in the car about 9 o’clock on a starry night, and just head west.

Next meeting: ‘On the Road’ by Jack Kerouac

I’m working on some calendaring option, but until then, we can just enter a post as a reminder. It’s searchable so should be easy enough to find. Rory is the moderator. Kris and Tom are hosts. Dec. 9.
